House renovation or new build scrapbook?
I have seen it described on television as a mood board a shopping list or a bunch of Likes. I tend to think of this very useful tool as a scrap book because I predominantly use photographs pulled from different sources from around the world to make mine.
Take for instance this door leading onto a Juliet balcony it is taken from a very grand house and will not be appropriate for my next humble project.
But I do like the proportions of the doors.
The size of the glass panes in relation to the solid wooden panel and that is something that could be useful to help me describe the style of door that I am looking for in my new house. I don’t like the colour of the timber so I can ask to see lighter shades of timber finishes suitable for a door like this.
Many people have simple CAD computer drawing software applications and with some time on their hands they can design room lay outs and doors and windows for example.
One of the problems we come across is that often they fall in love with their piece of creativity only to find it hard to take when a professional carpenter tells them that there are three thing which make the design unworkable.
There are sites such as “pinterest” which can stimulate your ideas and don’t be shy about steeling ideas from your friends homes either!
Take a tip from me – when using sketches, CAD drawings or photographs treat them as examples only and then you give yourself some room to improve on the original idea with the help of the construction team who will have a very good idea of how it is going to be in your home.
Another advantage of using a scrapbook is that your partner has plenty of opportunity to look at your ideas and comment. People waste a huge amount of time, money and create a lot of needless stress when they come out to choose things like bathrooms, tiles, windows and doors just because they have not discussed things first.
We understand this and always give our clients notice that it is time to choose the various fixtures.
One thing that we don’t do under any circumstances is choose on your behalf. Thank god for photographs and email. They enable us to discuss things clearly and quickly as often our clients are living thousands of miles away.
