Flashing ?
Flash Gordon, flashing blades and lightning flashes we have all heard of.
The subject of today’s blog is “Flashings” most of us won’t know what they are and some of us will never have seen them. They are in fact the second biggest reason for leaking roofs and roof problems other than broken or missing roof tiles.
The laying out of roof tiles on a new or repaired roof is pretty straight forward but fitting the flashing’s around adjoining walls, roof hips, chimneys and roof windows is difficult and vital that it is carried out properly.
Failure to do so will result in water entering the roof space causing rot and other problems associated with penetrating damp.
The roof flashing in Portugal are made of galvanized steel not lead so they require a different installation technique. We have ours made to measure for each roof job so that we know they will fit perfectly.
One of the main considerations in choosing the type of flashing to use on your roof is to make sure that they don’t collect or hold leaves deposited by the wind. Leaves can quickly build up preventing the rain water running away and instead driving it back under the roof tiles where it wets roof timbers and ceilings.
