Knocking through a window, patio doors and even Bi-fold doors in an old stone house
Many people contact Castelo Construction to ask questions and request advice on how to tackle knocking through a window, patio doors and even Bi-fold doors in an old stone house.
They certainly came to the right place as we are highly experienced in this type of work.
Knocking through a window, patio doors and even Bi-fold doors in an old stone house is a very dangerous job to tackle as a DIY fan or even an experienced builder or stone mason.
We recently cut out a patio door space for a client who is a stone mason by trade. He understood very well that old stone houses in Portugal are not constructed in the same way as they are in his home country and preferred to let the local experts do the work on his behalf.
At first glance it looks pretty straight forward work, very heavy but straight forward and indeed it is.
There is one massive catch though.
You need an awful lot of local experience to be able to read the construction method that was used to build the original stone house. If you are unable to do this and start removing stone from the wrong place first you literally could have the house down around your ears. Not that you would be around to tell the tale.
If you’re not sure how to call an ambulance in Portugal I would think very hard against doing this type of work.
OK enough of the warnings –
how big a hole can you create in an external wall of a stone house?.
In reality it all comes down to cost and how the stone house was originally constructed. The bigger the hole cut through the stone wall the more work has to be done to keep the structure strong.
This strengthening work impact’s upon the cost.
No one wants cracking plaster and sloping floors after they have remodeled their home.
You can also have a set of patio doors cut through a stone wall so that they lead off a bedroom on to a first floor veranda to take advantage of the views or some alfresco breakfast.
Search our blog for timber first floor verandas.
