Late September. It is that time of year again in Portugal when the walnuts are ready for picking and the rainstorms come with a vengeance. Not normally a big problem as it is still nice and warm.
Some people may find that there is a damp patch or two where the damp is penetrating the fabric of the home while other often find that their toilets are backing up and can’t be flushed. This is very often due to the septic tanks filling up with ground water (rain water soaked into the ground) as a result of the heavy rain.
It is very frustrating because although the rain finds its way in to the septic tank it doesn’t seem to find its way out a gain and as a result you have to have the council come around and empty the tank.
This could take a week or more before they turn up so you had better have some standby facilities or suffer the wrath of your family.
A week of using a bucket is no fun. But what can you do about it?
The reason that the septic tank flooding happens is because of the poor technology of the tank. The designs have not changes for hundreds of years and are still being fitted in modern new build homes.
