The difference is distinct yet many people are confused when it comes to damp proofing and waterproofing in building and home renovation work.
There are times when you will want to achieve a damp proof surface such as an internal wall and there are also times when you want to achieve a waterproof surface such as a roof or swimming pool for instance.
Damp Proofing is created to make the below ground (“grade” as it’s called in the trade) rooms habitable, breathable, healthy and pleasant to live in. A typical example here in Portugal would be the conversion of adegas, arumos and animal shelters into living rooms or bedrooms in old stone built houses.
What is often called the “cave” or “zone of humidity” in modern houses and because of the damp relegated to a garage or storage.
To make these areas comfortable you need an experienced team who will damp proof, insulate and ventilate the new living areas making them a valuable addition to your home.
Waterproofing is often required on outside staircases, verandas, roofs and terraces. Very often we carry out this work because the materials that were used originally were poor quality and have failed causing a wet area in the home, dark stains on the plaster and even mold.
A damp home is miserable.
If it’s a holiday home you can’t leave pictures on the wall or clothes in a wardrobe as they will quickly spoil. De humidifier don’t work well as they would have to be turned on which is expensive and need to be emptied continually.
If its your main home then its worse because of the unhealthy mold spores that will be in the air and the humid air causing respiratory problems. You don’t have to suffer damp in Portugal contact Castelo Construction and we will give you advice on what kind of damp it is and how to eradicate it from your home.
