Wood Floors
Occasionally we get to see inside an old Portuguese house that was originally built to a high standard. Even though they look tired, dusty and old they still have the WOW factor that they originally had. This is probably due to the type of wood used in areas such as wood floors, ceilings and doors. Very often the ever-present Portuguese woodworm will have devoured most of the wood and in many cases any softwood that had been used will have already been replaced. The hard wood floors although infested with wood worm may be treatable and reused.
Top tip If you want to re-use old hard wood floors or ceiling boards you can remove them, re level the floor or ceiling then lay particle boarding on the joists so that you have something substantial to fix the old no doubt twist board back to. Make sure that you have the old boards treated for wood worm or you could end up wasting your time as the wood worm will continue to munch onward.
Contact woodworm@casteloconstruction.com for advice on treating wood worm By fixing and gluing the old boards back to the particle board you can remove the serious bows and bends in the board which made up your old wood floors without losing the patina and lived in feel that makes these old wood floors so attractive.
Top tip If you find that when you have removed the old wood floors that some of the boards are not good enough to relayed because of rot or wood worm you can use new timber perhaps in a contrasting colour to form a border around the room so that it frames the old boards. For instances were you don’t have enough ceiling boards why not create a boarder or pattern in the center of the ceiling diamonds and hexagons are popular for instance. This will give you more scope to use your remaining ceiling boards.
