Controlling damp in stone houses
People who have found a very nice house in Portugal often have worries about buying the property as they don’t know if the damp that they saw can be treated.
They often come to Castelo Construction for help and advice because they like the property and location and need to know what the cost would be to rectify the damp problem.
Obviously every property is different and it is vital to the resale and healthy habitation of any home to work at controlling damp.
It can surprise us that people will spend money on a new kitchen before trying to correct the damp problems which in turn will probably shorted the life of the newly installed kitchen. Fitted furniture and damp dont go together!
If I was to write out a remedial task list for an old property the first thing would be to inspect the external walls and identify what they are made of as this dictates how we sort out the damp. Refurbish the roof and then the floors and then the windows and doors in that order.
As it takes a long time for thick stone walls to dry out (never fully) it’s a good idea to start on the anti damp work first.
Having your new home watertight and damp free makes the working environment more pleasant, the storage of materials easier and the chance of ruining new work is far less. Have a look at our website for more information or email info@casteloconstruction.com
